St Mary's Church
✝️ The Benefice of Bethersden, High Halden and Woodchurch
Nestled in the stunning Kent countryside between the Kentish Weald and Romney Marsh, our rural benefice is made up of three vibrant and historic parish churches:
-
St Margaret’s, Bethersden
-
St Mary’s, High Halden
-
All Saints, Woodchurch
Together, we form a worshipping community united in God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – and are part of the Diocese of Canterbury in the Church of England.
🕍 A Rich Heritage
Each church within our benefice is unique and steeped in history. These sacred buildings are not only places of worship but also rich in culture and spiritual heritage. Many families enjoy exploring them as part of a local pilgrimage or village outing.
St Mary’s Church, High Halden, for example, is a Grade I listed building dating back to before 1286. Its most striking feature is the remarkable timbered tower, likely constructed in the late 13th century, which showcases the impressive craftsmanship of medieval builders.
Inside, you'll find:
-
A stunning 80-foot spire
-
A 14th-century oak-arched porch
-
A beautifully preserved 13th-century font
-
Oak beams, trusses, and pillars that tell a story of enduring faith and tradition
🤝 Living Faith in the Community
Many members of our church community are actively involved in the life of the villages – supporting local events, schools, and family life. We believe in being present, visible, and helpful, and our calling is to:
Know God • Show His Love • Spread His Word
From Sunday services to seasonal celebrations and village gatherings, the benefice plays a key role in shaping the caring, close-knit atmosphere of our area.
