⚽ Sport at High Halden

“Sport is a universal language, building more bridges between people than anything else I can think of.”Sebastian Coe

🕊 Our Vision

In line with our Christian ethos and school vision, we aim for every child to leave High Halden physically literate, confident, and motivated to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity and sport. Physical education is not just about fitness – it’s about developing the whole child:

  • 📚 Knowledge of the body and how it works.

  • 🏃 Skills to move efficiently and effectively.

  • ❤️ Understanding the importance of health and fitness.

🎯 Our Aims

We give our pupils the chance to:

  • 👦 Develop physical and cognitive competence, and confidence in planning, performing, and evaluating movement.

  • 💓 Promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

  • 😀 Foster positive attitudes and teamwork.

  • 🛡 Ensure safe practice in all activities.

  • 💡 Build problem-solving and interpersonal skills with wider life applications.

  • ⚽ Explore different forms of sport and physical activity.

🏅 Specialist Coaching and Curriculum Enrichment

We are committed to offering the highest quality PE lessons possible. To support this, we employ specialist PE coaches to teach a variety of sports and skills across the school. This year, children have benefited from expert coaching in 🎾 tennis, 🏑 hockey, 🏏 cricket, and general PE. These specialists not only deliver high-quality sessions but also work alongside our teachers to provide ongoing training and upskilling, enriching our curriculum and ensuring that PE at High Halden continues to inspire and challenge every child.

🏃‍♂️ Physical Activity Every Day

We believe movement and fitness should be woven into the whole school day. Alongside PE lessons, children take part in initiatives such as:

  • Skip2Bfit – improving stamina, rhythm, and coordination through skipping challenges.

  • 🏃 The Daily Mile – a daily burst of running or jogging to improve fitness and focus.

  • 🌟 Everyday Active – encouraging regular movement breaks and active learning across the curriculum.

These activities help develop healthy habits, boost concentration, and promote wellbeing.

🏊 Swimming for KS2

All children in Years 5 and 6 take part in a block of swimming lessons during the winter months at Tenterden Leisure Centre. Our aim is for every pupil to meet national curriculum swimming expectations by the time they leave Year 6, ensuring they are confident, competent swimmers and understand essential water safety skills.

🎖 Challenger Troop

Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to take part in the  Tiger Troop programme – a unique programme that builds resilience, teamwork, and leadership. Through challenging outdoor and team-based activities, children are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone and develop CDRILS: Courage, Determination, Resilience, Initiative, Leadership, and Self-discipline. These experiences leave a lasting impact, giving pupils skills they can carry into all areas of life.

🏕 Residential Adventures

We run a two-year cycle of residential trips for Years 5 and 6, giving every child the opportunity to experience a variety of outdoor and adventurous activities. Destinations include:

  • PGL – activities such as rock climbing, giant swing, abseiling, archery, and team problem-solving.

  • Bewl Water – water-based activities like canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, and sailing.

These trips help pupils build independence, confidence, and lasting memories while deepening friendships and teamwork skills.

🧭 Outdoor and Adventurous Activities on Site

Our school grounds are equipped with a network of orienteering points and maps, enabling pupils to enjoy active challenges while developing their geography and navigation skills. OAA sessions encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and physical fitness in a fun and engaging way.

👥 Leadership & Lifelong Sport

In Years 5 and 6, pupils use the Sports Education Model to explore roles beyond playing:

  • 📝 Record-keeping

  • 📋 Managing

  • 🏅 Coaching

  • ⚖ Refereeing

This broadens their understanding of sport and how to stay involved for life.

⭐ Beyond the Curriculum

We offer a wide range of Extra-Curricular Sporting Activities including:

  • ⚽ Football

  • 🏐 Netball

  • 🤾 Handball

  • 🏸 Badminton

  • 🏏 Cricket

Our children regularly represent the school in competitions, and we proudly celebrate their achievements during assemblies, on our social media feeds and newsletters.
