In Year 5 and 6, children build on the strong foundations from earlier years by developing more complex ideas, deeper knowledge, and higher-level skills, all while preparing for the transition to secondary school. We deliver a varied and exciting curriculum, designed to capture children’s interests while ensuring the continued acquisition of essential skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. We are committed to providing high-quality teaching and learning, while also equipping pupils with the confidence, independence, and resilience they need to become lifelong learners. Alongside academic progress, children take on greater responsibilities across the school, including key leadership roles, and benefit from a wide range of opportunities for personal growth such as Challenger Troop, swimming lessons, and residential trips. These experiences enrich their learning, nurture their character, and help them to be fully prepared for the next stage in their education and beyond.

Our two-year curriculum cycle in Year 5 and 6 builds carefully upon learning from previous years, ensuring that children revisit and strengthen key concepts, knowledge, and skills as they progress. At the same time, they are introduced to more challenging ideas that encourage them to think deeply, question, and become critical, reflective learners. This approach helps to consolidate foundations while stretching pupils to achieve their very best. The overarching themes for this academic year are outlined below, and further details for each term can be found in our learning overviews. It is also useful to refer to the knowledge organisers, which provide key information and vocabulary to help you support your child’s learning at home.
