๐ Positive Behaviour & Support
At High Halden Church of England Primary School, we understand that behaviour can be challenging for a variety of reasons. We're here to support families through every bump in the road.
๐ค Why Might My Child Be Acting Out?
There are lots of reasons children may show difficult behaviour:
-
๐ณ Life changes (new sibling, moving house, starting school)
-
๐คช Stress in the family
-
๐ Needing attention
-
๐ฌ Previous rewards for poor behaviour (e.g. sweets to stay quiet)
๐ช What Can I Do?
โ Do What Feels Right
Trust your instincts as a parent. Your child will sense if you're unsure.
โณ Be Consistent
Stick to the same responses each time to help your child understand boundaries.
โ Try Not to Overreact
Staying calm helps de-escalate situations. Take breaks, talk to other parents, and recharge.
๐ฌ Talk it Out
Even non-verbal children benefit from explanations. Talk them through what you're doing and why.
โจ Celebrate the Good Stuff
Notice and praise the positive. A simple hug, smile, or kind word goes a long way.
๐ Offer Rewards, Not Bribes
Wait until after they've completed a task to offer praise or small rewards.
โ Avoid Smacking
Lead by example. Gentle parenting builds trust and long-term positive behaviour.

๐ Restorative Conversations
When children make behaviour choices that impact others or the school environment, we take a restorative approach. We support pupils in reflecting on their actions, understanding the impact, and working towards making it right. Our staff guide children through calm, structured conversations that focus on repair, reflection, and growth.
We also use a helpful Restorative Conversation Visual Support Tool in school, which supports pupils of all ages in working through the key questions of: What happened? How did it make others feel? What can be done to make it right? How can we do things differently next time?
Whether you need guidance, reassurance or a helping hand, we're here to walk alongside you. You're doing a great job – and we're in this together. โจ
