  • Year 6 visit Canterbury Cathedral

    Tue 15 Nov 2016 George, Year 6

    Canterbury Cathedral Trip

On the 10th November Year 6 visited Canterbury Cathedral for the Day. They went with other Year 6 pupils from the Ashford area.

George, Year 6 has written the following report:

When we first arrived we gathered in the west side of the cathedral to find out how the day was planned for us. Then we were sent to our groups. After we had completed our activities we went into another part of the cathedral to eat our lunch.

Everywhere in the cathedral was enormous and it had really high ceilings. The guides said that the reason everywhere was so big was to be able to fit everyone in to tell them the story of Jesus and the Bible.

Whilst there, we learnt about many different parables. Including The Lost Sheep, The Conversion of Saul and Moses parting the Red Sea.

Some activities were held in the Crypt to show how certain characters might feel in different stories. In one we smelt different things which might have been what Jesus might have been able to smell in His time like Rosemary and Mint.

When Saul went blind we put on blacked out ski googles on so that we couldn’t see and then we talked about what it felt like not being able to see.

At the end of the day we all came together in the east side of the cathedral to sing hymns and say prayers.

We all really enjoyed the day.

  • Big Draw Day

Mon 07 Nov 2016 Mrs Winter

What a Dahlicious Day the children had on Monday 7th November. We were very lucky to have Mr. Whitham, an artist and cartoonist with us for the whole day. Over the day every class had at least one workshop.

He began and ended the day with Owl Class (Year’s 5 and 6). They took the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as their starting point. They looked at the illustrations by Quentin Blake and then created their own Charlie inspired character from a photo of their own face. They began with a line drawing which they later painted with water-colour paints. They produced some truly amazing results!

Next were the Robins (Years 1 and 2), who created Mr Twit faces from shredded paper and textured materials. A great (and messy) time was had by all.  They were followed by Ducklings (Foundation Stage), who looked at the Enormous Crocodile. They used line drawing and printing to create their own crocodile.

Finally Eagle Class, (Years 3 and 4) created a scene from James and the Giant Peach – they even had a giant peach! The children carefully produced clay creatures to adorn the peach just like in the story!

A big thank you from all of us to Mr Whitham for a truly inspiring and creative day. We would also like to thank Mrs Wood who came in and helped Mr Whitham and all of the classes to create their masterpieces.

The artwork will be displayed in the hall for all parents to see on Parent’s Evenings this month.

  • Hindu Workshops

Wed 02 Nov 2016 Mrs Winter

On Monday 31st October we started term 2 with an exciting day of workshops. Indri travelled all the way from Nottingham to teach us all about his faith – Hinduism. The children were taught about the important festival of Diwali. They had great fun slaying Ravana the ten headed demon as they learnt the story of Rama and Sita that is fundamental to Diwali.

They were also able to see what a Hindu shrine might look like and learnt that every Hindu has a shrine within their own home. In Hinduism there are many gods and goddesses and families have a shrine to one or more of the gods or goddesses . The shrine is used as part of daily prayer.

The highlight for the children was when they were able to dress in traditional Indian saris and had face paint applied as Hindu’s would at festival times.

The children learnt a lot and had great fun as well; from the feedback it is clear which part of the day was the most memorable!

“I enjoyed the face painting and I never knew that they did this to celebrate Diwali,” Archie Year 6.

“I enjoyed learning the dance and that it was the second day of Diwali,” Katie, Year 6.

“The best bit for me was the face-painting. The reason we did this was to show Diwali is a party and celebration. Diwali is the festival of light,” George, Year 6.

“It was fun dressing up in a sari and wearing all of the bangles which were really pretty,” Ruby O, Year 5.
